3 decades in and I still messed up a simple mortise joint last Tuesday
I've been doing this since 1992, started with my dad's old chisels in his garage outside Pittsburgh. Last week I had a basic oak table leg to mortise, not even a fancy one, and I still chiseled past my line by about a quarter inch. What got me was I was rushing, trying to beat the rain before it swelled the wood, and I skipped my normal layout check. I had to glue in a shim and redo it, took an extra 40 minutes. I learned that no matter how many years you have, you never skip the marking gauge. Has anyone else had a simple job bite them after decades of experience?
