The 'just be positive' advice in interviews is actively killing careers
Honestly, I sat through 11 interviews over the last 3 months for a project manager spot and every single one had hiring managers who wanted me to fake enthusiasm about doing the same work I've already done for 8 years. They keep asking 'where do you see yourself in five years' and I finally just said 'on a site that isn't on fire, hopefully' and the room went dead silent. Tbh, I think the whole 'passion' thing is a trap, nobody in construction asks if you love concrete, they ask if you can pour it level. I get that soft skills matter, but we've swung so far into fake positivity that nobody can actually talk about real problems like burnout or a toxic boss. Has anyone else gotten dinged for being honest about the grind, or is it just me?
