Serious question, when did 'follow your passion' become bad career advice

I spent 4 years chasing a graphic design job because everyone said to do what you love. Ended up $30k in student debt and hating freelance work. Then my buddy landed a solid IT gig at 22 making $55k a year doing something he just tolerates. He told me flat out, 'Work is for paying bills, not fulfilling your soul.' That hit different. Now I'm studying for a CompTIA cert instead of tweaking portfolios. Has anyone else found more peace picking a boring job with good pay?

Man I feel this so much. The whole "do what you love" thing sounds great until you realize it makes your hobby a source of stress and bills. Picking a decent paying job you don't hate gives you way more freedom to actually enjoy your real passions on weekends.

Yeah been there, keeping your passion as just a hobby really does save the fun part of it.
