My boss mentioned a number in passing and it changed how I plan my whole career
I was in a one on one with my manager at our office in Columbus and she dropped a stat that I have not been able to shake. She said that when she looked at our department's pay data, people who asked for a raise at their review got one 68 percent of the time, and people who waited to be offered got one about 15 percent of the time. I always assumed asking was risky and that good work would just get noticed on its own. Turns out sitting quiet was the actual risk the whole time. I finally asked for a 6 percent bump at my review on Friday and got it, which felt huge since I had been at the same pay for 20 months. It was not a big dramatic win, just a small one, but it made me realize I had been leaving money on the table out of pure nerves. Now I am trying to figure out what else I have been too scared to just ask for. Has anyone else heard a number like this that made them rethink how they handle reviews?
