My neighbor in Fargo talked me out of storing my Firebird on dirt, and I'm still a little annoyed he was right
For two winters I kept my 1998 Firebird on a gravel pad behind my shed because concrete was gonna run me $1,800 and I figured gravel drains fine. My neighbor Dale, who restored a 1969 Chevelle in his own shop, walked over in November and asked if I'd pulled the tarp to look underneath lately. I hadn't. He had me crawl under with a flashlight and there was surface rust creeping along the rear frame rails and both floor pan seams, way worse than the year before. He explained that gravel holds ground moisture and it rises up into the car all winter while concrete keeps that dampness below the slab. I poured a 12x20 pad the next spring for $1,950 and just checked the underside after this past winter with zero new rust. Anyone else get talked into spending money on a pad they swore they didn't need?
