Kept my sleeping bag in the stuff sack for 3 summers before a guy at a campsite in Flagstaff asked to see it
I always thought keeping my bag crammed in that little sack was just how you stored it, you know, tight and neat in the closet. Last August we were at a site outside Flagstaff and this older guy in the next spot saw me pull it out and asked how long it had been in there. When I said since I bought it, he just shook his head and told me to lay it out flat at home instead. I got home and actually read the tag for the first time in 3 years and it said store loosely, not compressed. That bag always felt flat and cold on fall trips and I figured I just slept cold, but it turns out I was squishing the loft out of it the whole time. I laid it out under the bed for a couple weeks and it puffed back up way more than I expected. I feel dumb that a tag solved something I blamed on my own body for years. So now I'm second guessing all my other storage habits, do you guys hang your bags or lay them flat, and does it actually matter that much?
That line about blaming your own body for years really hits. I did the same thing with my old down jacket, wore it every winter and swore I just ran cold, then my sister told me to stop hanging it on a wire hanger in the closet because it was crushing the insulation on the shoulders. Sure enough the shoulders were flat as a pancake while the rest was still puffy. I hung it loose on a wide hook after that and it came back to life in a couple weeks. Funny how we just accept being cold as some personal flaw instead of looking at the gear.
