I finally tried that sleeping pad trick my buddy Mark told me about
Mark said to put a cheap foam pad under my inflatable sleeping pad for extra warmth. I thought he was nuts, but I tried it last weekend at Big Creek Campground in Alabama. It was 38 degrees that night and I stayed warm while my friend on just an inflatable was freezing. Has anyone else tried layering pads like that or is it just a old guy thing?

Cold ground will suck heat right through an inflatable, cheap foam works great.

Actually I gotta push back a little here @brians27. I think it depends on what kind of cold ground we're talking about. If you're on frozen dirt or snow, sure, cheap foam helps some but it's not gonna stop that ground cold from creeping through after a few hours. I've used those folding foam pads and they work okay for summer but in real cold I'd rather double up with an inflatable on top of the foam. The air gap underneath you is what really keeps you warm, at least in my experience.
