Tarp vs footprint for muddy spring camping, my pick surprised me

Headed to Shenandoah last month and couldn't decide between a $15 tarp from the hardware store or a $40 custom footprint for my tent. Went with the tarp because it's bigger and I figured I could rig it over the tent if rain hit. Ended up using it as both a ground sheet and a rain fly extension, zero issues with mud or puddles. The footprint would've fit nicer but the tarp gives way more options. Anyone else skip the fancy stuff and use basic tarps on purpose?
