Spent 5 hours on a stuck filter ring that a $4 tool fixed in 10 minutes
So I had a customer's old 50mm come in with a filter ring bent so bad it wouldn't budge, and I tried everything I had in my bench drawer at the shop in Tucson. I soaked it in penetrating oil overnight, tried two different strap wrenches, and even carefully used a heat gun on low hoping the aluminum would give a little. Five hours spread over two days and I was about ready to tell the guy it was a loss. Then a buddy who does watch repair hands me this tiny nylon wedge tool he got for like $4 and tells me to tap it in the gap and twist. Ten minutes later the ring was off and the threads were fine. I felt like an idiot for not asking around sooner. What's the dumb little tool in your kit that ended up beating all your fancy ones?
