Tried pocket screws on a face frame for the first time and the stile split on me
I have been building face frames with dowels and glue for about nine years now, mostly kitchens around the Dayton area. Last month a customer wanted a small vanity done fast, so I figured I would finally give pocket screws a shot on the stiles. I set the jig for 3/4 inch stock, used the fine thread screws, and clamped everything down like I always do. Two of the six joints split right along the grain when I ran the screws in, and one of those splits opened up again after the glue dried. I was out maybe 40 bucks in maple and a whole afternoon redoing those rails. What I think happened is I had the drill bit too close to the edge on the narrow 2 inch stiles, plus I probably ran the screw in faster than I should have. So now I am wondering if pocket screws are just fussy on narrow stock or if my setup was off. Do you all move the jig further from the edge on 2 inch stiles, or do you just skip pockets on anything that narrow?
