Spent three days trying to get a flush fit on a built-in around a fireplace that was out of square by almost an inch.

Took me nearly a whole weekend to scribe and cut a cabinet face around a fireplace that was off by about three-quarters of an inch on one side. Once you get that first piece fitted tight against the uneven wall and hide the seam with a nice piece of trim, the whole thing looks like it was meant to be there from the start. It's a pain while you're doing it, but that extra patience pays off when you step back and see no gaps.

My last fireplace job had the same problem. I scribed the back panel to the wall with a compass and a jigsaw. The ugly gap disappears behind the trim anyway.

Yeah but is it really that big a deal? I see what @rowanellis is saying about hiding it behind trim, but most people just shove some caulk in there and call it a day. It's a fireplace, not a museum piece. Unless the wall is a total roller coaster, a little gap won't kill anyone. My buddy's place has a quarter inch gap along his whole unit and you literally never notice it once the room is set up.
