Spent 6 years gluing up panels before cutting them to size, then a guy in Toledo showed me his process
I always glued up oversized panels and trimmed them down after, thinking it kept things flat and square, but last Tuesday a cabinetmaker in Toledo walked me through his shop and every panel was cut to final size first. He said the glue up stays flatter when the pieces are already sized because you are not fighting the saw against a big heavy slab, and after trying it on 3 drawer boxes this week I think he is right. How are the rest of you handling your panel glue ups, sized first or trimmed after?
Cutting first means every small error stacks up and then you are stuck with a panel that is already too small, no room to fix anything. I have had way more saves trimming after glue up than I ever lost to a slab fighting the saw.
