My dovetail gaps went from credit card wide to almost nothing after I changed one thing
I cut dovetails by hand for 4 years and always had gaps you could slide a business card into. Two weeks ago I switched from marking with a pencil to a marking knife and a 0.5mm mechanical pencil only for the baseline. The difference was instant, my pins and tails fit so tight I had to tap them with a dead blow. I also started undercutting the baseline by about 1/32 inch with a chisel instead of trying to saw perfectly to the line. My scrap pile of failed joints went from 6 or 7 per drawer down to 1. I am not saying I am good now, just that the knife made way more difference than I expected. Anyone else make one small change like that and see a jump in fit?
Marking knife works for the layout lines, sure, but blaming the pencil for 4 years of gaps is a stretch. I know guys who cut perfect dovetails with a dull golf pencil because their saw and chisel work is actually dialed in. The knife just showed you where you were already sloppy.
