Paid $180 for a 'tactical' backpack, straps started fraying in 4 months

Everyone on here swears by that brand, but mine fell apart on light commutes. Got a $40 canvas bag from a surplus store in Portland that's still solid after 2 years. Anyone else had hype gear crap out fast?

Backwards logic here. You paid 180 bucks for a bag and got mad it wore out, but the 40 dollar one lasted longer, so what does that prove? That cheap gear can be tough sometimes. Not that the expensive stuff is a scam. High end fabric is lighter and more technical, which usually means less material in the weave to save weight. That's a tradeoff you sign up for when you buy that style of pack. Your canvas bag is heavy and basic, so of course it's gonna hold up, it's basically a brick with straps. The real question is why you're comparing a commuter bag to a military spec one. Different tools for different jobs, and yeah, sometimes the hype brand nailed the design but cut corners on the nylon. Doesn't make the whole category trash.
