My 12-year-old canvas duffel ripped at the strap seam in the Anchorage airport, and I fixed it with a $3 needle from a hotel sewing kit
Up in Alaska last month, got off the plane and heard this awful tearing noise. The strap on my old canvas duffel (bought it in 2012, been on maybe 40 flights) was pulling clean off the seam. Everything I own was about to spill out on the baggage belt.
The airline desk had nothing. But the hotel gift shop sold one of those little travel sewing kits for like 3 bucks. The needle in it was junk but it worked. I sat in the lobby for an hour doing this ugly Frankenstein stitch through the canvas and up into the webbing. Two rows of it. Didn't look pretty.
That's been about 7 weeks now and the repair is holding. Honestly feels stronger than the original seam did.
So is it worth taking it to a real leather shop to redo the whole strap properly, or do I just leave my ugly fix alone since it works? Anyone had a canvas bag actually outlive a bad home repair like this?
