Belt sander versus my grandpa's old block plane, no contest

I used to do all my edge smoothing with a hand plane like my grandpa taught me back in Ohio, even for rough lumber. Last summer I finally bought a used belt sander from a neighbor's garage sale for $40 and now I only break out the plane for the final pass on furniture pieces. What actually changed was time, a 6 foot oak table top takes me 20 minutes now instead of an afternoon. Has anyone else swapped a hand tool for a power tool but kept the old one for specific jobs?
