Took 12 years to realize I was seasoning my cast iron wrong

I grew up watching my mom scrub her skillet with soap and water, so I did the same thing until last month when my neighbor saw me and nearly had a heart attack. She showed me the rinse and oil method on her 30 year old pan and explained the soap was stripping the seasoning the whole time. Anyone else have a kitchen habit that took way too long to unlearn?
