Rant: my grandma saw my blackened grilled cheese and said hers used to look like that on purpose
So my grandma was over at my place in Dayton last Sunday and I was making grilled cheese for the kids, got distracted by a phone call about a breaker panel, and pulled four sandwiches out of the skillet that were straight up charcoal on one side. I was about to toss them in the trash and she grabbed one, laughed, and said back in the 60s she burned them on purpose because that crunch was the best part and nobody complained. That hit me weird because I always figured burnt food was just a fail, something to hide or scrape into the sink. She said her mom did it the same way and that a little char on a cheap white bread sandwich with government cheese was a treat after a long shift at the factory. I stood there holding a spatula over the trash can just thinking about how I've thrown out probably a hundred sandwiches like that over the past few years without a second thought. She ate half of one right there at my table, crumbs and all, and told me I season things better than she ever did. Now I'm wondering if I've been tossing out the good part this whole time. Does anybody else have a family member who actually likes the burnt bits, or am I about to start a war at my own dinner table?
