Unpopular opinion: That flyer for free pallets is a scam waiting to happen

I grabbed a phone number off a bulletin board at a laundromat in Akron that said "FREE PALLETS - YOU HAUL." Called the guy and he said I needed to bring a $50 deposit first to "hold my spot" since so many people wanted them. Red flag city. I bet 90% of those free pallet postings are just people trying to get you to Venmo them cash for something that doesn't exist. Anyone else run into this kind of setup on community boards?

Shook my head reading this because I almost fell for the exact same thing last month. Someone posted free pallets on a town Facebook group and wanted me to send $30 through CashApp to "reserve my pickup time." I asked if I could just pay cash when I got there and they blocked me immediately. It's wild how many people try this little trick on community boards, especially targeting folks who are just trying to save a few bucks on materials.

My dad actually got burned on a similar thing with "free" firewood on Craigslist back in 2018. Paid $20 via PayPal to hold it and showed up to an empty lot. @barbaragarcia you dodged a bullet for sure. These scammers know exactly how to bait people just trying to do honest projects.
