A guy at the laundromat on 5th pinned up a hand-drawn map of every working outlet in the building
I was killing time last Tuesday at the coin laundry on 5th waiting on a double load, and there was this older man with a roll of tape and a piece of poster board covered in little boxes drawn in marker. I asked what he was doing and he said he comes in every Sunday and the outlets by the folding tables are dead half the time, so he drew the whole floor and marked which ones actually work. He had tiny labels like "back wall, dead since March" and a little star for the one good outlet near the soap machine. I stood there for probably ten minutes watching him tape it right above the change machine. He shrugged and said, "Nobody asked me to, but nobody else was gonna do it either." Two women folding towels came over and started pointing at spots on his map and arguing about which dryer gets hottest. I took a photo of it before I left because I could not believe someone cared that much about a laundromat bulletin board. Has anyone else seen a stranger leave behind something that useful on a board?
Who has that kind of time anymore? That guy is a hero though. My laundromat has three dryers that eat quarters and nobody does a thing about it. The guy made a whole map for free and nobody even asked him. That line about nobody else was gonna do it really gets me. Small acts like that make a crummy chore way better.
