The stat about grocery store markups made me mad

I was reading a report from the USDA last week and found out grocery stores mark up produce by an average of 40% over what they pay the farmer. I knew there was some padding but that number shocked me. For things like apples and oranges it's even higher in some stores near me in Austin. I started tracking my fruit and veggie spending against local farmer's market prices. Turns out I was paying $2.50 more per pound for the same type of tomatoes at HEB. That adds up fast when you cook from scratch like I do. Has anyone else run the numbers on what you waste at the grocery store vs a co-op or market?

oh man the 40% markup thing, that hit me hard too when i first saw it. i actually started doing something similar last spring after i got fed up with paying almost 4 bucks for a head of broccoli at my local giant. i switched to this small co-op near my place and now i just buy what's in season and plan my meals around that. the key for me was cutting down waste because i used to buy too much at the grocery store and half of it would rot. now i go twice a week with a list and it's way cheaper plus the produce actually tastes better. the only catch is i have to be flexible with my recipes but honestly that made me a better cook.
