Rant: the envelope system finally clicked for me after 3 failed tries
I tried the cash envelope thing twice in college and once after my first real job and it always fell apart by week two. What finally worked was only doing it for groceries and eating out, just those two, nothing else. My problem was I was trying to budget every single dollar in cash and I hate carrying coins around. Now I pull $120 every Friday for food and when the envelope is empty I eat whatever is in the pantry. Has anyone else had success only using envelopes for a couple categories instead of the whole budget?
Doing just two categories is the move. I tried the full cash thing years ago and lasted maybe 10 days before I gave up. What stuck for me was gas and coffee, weird combo but those were my two money leaks. I'd pull $60 a week, $40 for gas and $20 for coffee, and once the coffee cash was gone I made it at home. It made me actually think about every $4 latte instead of just swiping and not caring. The rest of my budget stays on my card so I'm not walking around with a wad of ones like a weirdo. Small scale works way better than trying to do everything at once.
