My neighbor's comment about her grocery bill made me check my own
She mentioned she only spends $75 a week for her family of three, which seemed impossible. I looked at my receipts and realized I was buying a lot of pre-cut veggies and single-serve snacks, adding about $40 extra. What's one small switch you made that cut your food costs?

That $75 a week is probably just for groceries, not counting stuff like toilet paper or cleaning supplies. My bill looked low until I added in all the non-food items from a separate store run.

Yeah, I started a separate line on my budget just for that stuff. I call it the "household tax." Paper goods, detergent, all of it. Throwing a $12 thing of laundry pods on top of a food run wrecks the math. Now I buy those in bulk once a month so my weekly number is just food.

Tell me about it. I once did a victory lap around my kitchen because my receipt was so small. Then I remembered I still needed to buy soap, paper towels, and trash bags. That cheap trip suddenly cost as much as a nice dinner out. My budget sheet looked like it was lying to me. Now I just assume every total is wrong until I've made two separate trips.
