My grocery budget was fine until I tracked what we actually threw out

I always thought we were pretty good with food waste, maybe $20 a month max. Then last week I actually weighed the trash bags before taking them out. Over 7 days we tossed 11 pounds of spoiled produce and leftovers, that's like $38 worth of food. I found that stat from the EPA, they say the average family wastes about $1,500 a year on uneaten groceries, which made me actually start meal planning around what's already in the fridge. Has anyone else tried the 'eat the fridge first' method and did it actually cut your grocery bill?
