Trying to get a cheap train ticket across Italy took me 11 days and 3 apps to figure out
Back in 2019 I could walk up to a machine in Rome and grab a regionale ticket to Florence for like 9 euros with no planning at all. Last month I tried to do the same route and the machine only showed the fast trains at 45 euros, so I figured the cheap ones must be online somewhere. I downloaded Trenitalia, then Italo, then some third party app that charged a fee, and none of them showed the same prices for the same day. Turns out the regionale tickets only pop up if you pick the exact station pairs and uncheck the fast train filter, which took me 11 days of poking at it before I got it. I finally booked Rome to Florence for 13 euros, but I felt dumb for how long that took. Has anyone else run into this with the Italian rail apps, or is there a trick I'm still missing?
