Stop booking hostels through big travel sites, you're paying a 20% markup

I compared 10 hostels in Barcelona last week and the official site was always cheaper than Booking.com or Hostelworld, so why does everyone keep using those sites and then complaining about not having enough cash for tapas?

You said "the official site was always cheaper" and I think that's the key point people miss. Most don't realize those booking sites tack on fees that can really add up over a week long trip. I always check the hostel's own website first after learning this lesson the hard way in Prague a few years ago.

Oh man, totally agree! I've saved so much by going direct and sometimes they even throw in a free breakfast or late checkout if you just ask.
