My cheap hostel booking in Prague fell through at midnight

This was two months ago, I landed and the guy at the desk said my reservation didn't exist. I had paid $15 a night through some random booking site. Had to walk around with my backpack for an hour until I found a different place for $40, which blew my budget. I learned to always get a printed confirmation email, not just a screenshot. Has anyone else had a hostel just ghost them like that? What's your backup plan?

Got stranded in Berlin" - see that's the part that gets me. How is it even legal for these sites to take your money and leave you with nothing? Shouldn't there be some kind of law about guaranteeing the booking actually exists before you pay?

Wait, they got stranded? Like, actually stuck there with nowhere to stay? That's way worse than just a messed up reservation. Did the site just take the money and vanish? I've heard horror stories but that's next level bad.
