I used to burn $200+ a month on rental cars, now I plan trips around a $35 bus pass
For about three years I always grabbed a rental car for every trip, usually around $50 a day plus gas and parking. Last October I went to Portland for four days and the rental alone was going to be $240. A friend there told me to just get a $35 seven day transit pass instead. I did it and used buses and light rail the whole time, even out to the coast. Now I check transit options before I book anything, and my last two trips cost under $80 total for getting around. Does anyone else plan their whole route around public transit, or do you still rent a car for the freedom?
Who knew a bus pass could change how you plan a whole trip? I used to be the guy who said you NEED a car or you miss everything. Then I did a week in Seattle with just the light rail and a bus pass and honestly it was BETTER. No hunting for parking, no $40 a night garage fees, and I actually looked out the window instead of watching traffic. Now I map out transit lines before I even pick a hotel. Still rent a car for places like national parks where there is just no other way, but for any city trip the pass wins every time.
