Found out hostels in Lisbon charge $9 a night if you book the day before, not 3 months out
I always booked hostels far ahead because everyone says prices go up closer to the date. Last month I was in Porto with no plan and watched a Lisbon place sit at $34 for four days. The night before I needed it, the price dropped to $9, so I grabbed it and asked the front desk guy about it. He said unsold beds go cheap at the last minute because an empty bunk earns nothing, and he showed me two more places doing the same thing. I paid $9 for a Tuesday and $11 for a Friday, same week, no catch. Now I only book a refundable first night somewhere and wing the rest. Anyone else notice last minute beds in Europe drop like this, or was Lisbon just lucky?
