Found a $3 train trick that saved me $40 in London

I was in London last month and needed to get from Heathrow to Paddington. Everyone says take the Heathrow Express for 25 pounds, but I decided to try something random. I used a contactless debit card instead of buying a ticket and it only charged me 11 pounds for the same trip. Turns out the express trains cap their fare with contactless during off-peak hours. I rode the regular tube the rest of the week and never spent more than 4 pounds per ride. Has anyone else tried a random payment method in a foreign city and saved way more than expected?

Did @palmer.ryan's mate use a specific app or just Apple Pay for that Paris trick?

Did your card work for the tube the whole time? That's pretty clever. A buddy of mine did something similar in Paris a couple years back. He tried using his phone to tap on the Metro instead of buying a carnet of tickets. For whatever reason it charged him some weird daily cap that ended up being half the price of the weekly pass. He ended up riding all over the city for a week and spent less than 15 euros total. He still talks about it like he beat the system or something.
