Tried freezing leftover rice for fried rice

Thawed it out and it turned into a mushy paste. Did I mess up the freezing method or is this just how cheap rice works? Anyone got a trick for making it clump right?

Oh man, my buddy tried the same thing last month and it turned into a total disaster. He threw his leftover rice straight into a bag and forgot to flatten it out first, so it froze into one big brick. Pro tip from him: spread it thin on a baking sheet before freezing, then it thaws out way better for fried rice.

@grace565 Totally second the baking sheet tip, works like a charm! I actually read somewhere that you should also let the rice cool completely on the sheet for like 20 minutes before bagging it, otherwise the steam makes ice crystals and then your fried rice gets mushy. My neighbor swears by tossing the frozen rice with a little bit of oil before it goes in the pan, helps it separate better.
