Shoutout to the guy at the Kroger in Athens who showed me the clearance meat shelf is in the BACK, not the front
I spent about 8 months walking right past the markdown meat at my store because I always checked the front case where the fancy cuts sit. Turns out the reduced stuff gets tucked on a little shelf near the back wall by the butcher counter, and one guy stocking shelves pointed me to it after I asked where the cheap chicken went. That same trip I grabbed 4 packs of drumsticks for $1.79 a pound and a pork shoulder for $6 total, which fed us for like 5 days. Now I swing by that back corner first thing before I even grab a cart, and some trips the shelf is totally picked clean by 10am. Does your store put the markdowns somewhere weird too, or is mine just hiding them on purpose?
Wait, they keep it in the back at your store too? Mine hides the markdown meat on a bottom shelf tucked behind the dairy coolers and I only found it cause a worker was restocking and I asked where the cheap ground beef went. I used to walk the whole meat aisle twice and leave with nothing, then one day I found a family pack of thighs for like 3 bucks and I almost yelled. Now I hit that shelf before I even grab a cart, same as you, and yeah, on good days it gets wiped out early. It really does feel like they try to keep the cheap stuff out of sight so you grab the full price packs first.
