Remember when a bag of potatoes could feed you for a week?

Back in 2012, my car broke down and I had exactly $17 for food until payday. I bought a 10lb bag of russets, a stick of butter, and a head of cabbage, and ate baked potatoes with fried cabbage for six days straight. What's your go-to 'broke week' meal that actually tastes good?

Sounds a bit dramatic for 2012 honestly. That's not exactly ancient history and potatoes were still cheap. My go-to is just boxed mac and cheese with some hot dogs mixed in.

Read an article that said some areas had really bad potato crops around then, prices actually did spike for a bit. Boxed mac with hot dogs is a classic, can't argue with that. Just remember not everyone had the same budget or lived near a cheap store. Felt like a big deal when your usual cheap meal wasn't so cheap anymore.
