My landlord in Cleveland showed me how to stretch $20 of groceries into 6 dinners
Back in 2019 I was broke and living in a tiny apartment in Cleveland, and my landlord Dave noticed me carrying a sad bag of ramen and canned corn up the stairs. He invited me into his kitchen and spent 45 minutes showing me how he made a big pot of bean and rice soup that fed him for almost a week on about $7. He said "beans don't care if you're poor, they just want a little onion and time" and I still think about that. Does anyone else have an older person in their life who taught them a cheap meal trick that actually stuck?
My grandma in Toledo once made a "casserole" that was literally just rice, a can of cream of mushroom, and whatever sad veggies were dying in her fridge. I tried to recreate it last year and somehow burned rice in a rice cooker, so yeah, the magic skipped a generation. Dave sounds like a legend though, that soup line about beans not caring is weirdly deep.
