I finally tried the $2 bag of rice instead of the $8 box of instant, and now I owe my landlord an apology
My landlord Sal, who is 74 and grew up in Vietnam, kept telling me to stop buying those little microwave rice cups and just get a big sack of plain rice for cheap, but I figured it was too much hassle for one guy living alone. Three months in, I'm spending about $6 a month on rice instead of $40, and I actually make it in a pot on the stove in 20 minutes while I do dishes. So which is it, are the cheap staples really always the move, or does the time and cleanup make the pricier stuff worth it for some people?
