Old timer told me to use a string line instead of a level for long runs

An old mason at a job site in Columbus told me to ditch the level for anything over 10 feet and pull a tight string line instead. I tried it on a 30 foot retaining wall and the course came out perfectly straight on the first try. Has anyone else had better luck switching to string lines for long brick walls?

@webb.christopher you're probably right, my string was tighter than my budget so I got lucky. My last attempt at 30 feet ended up looking like a roller coaster because I forgot to check the middle as I worked.

30 feet is actually where a string line really shows its limit. I've had them sag just enough in the middle to throw off a course on longer retaining walls. You might want to check the middle with a level every few bricks just to be safe. Did you pull it tight enough that it barely touches the brick at the ends?
