Yeah, mason_stone9 gets it. That grip change thing is everything. A trowel feels dead if you just choke up on it like a hammer. Let it sit loose, let your wrist roll. Makes the mud work for you instead of fighting it. Hard to explain until you feel it, right?

That old guy probably showed you how a trowel is just an extension of your hand. Makes you realize it's not about the tool but how you move it. Ever notice how your grip changes for different tasks?
