An old timer in Toledo said to dunk my trowel in water before spreading mortar, and my joints have never looked cleaner
I figured he was messing with the new guy back in 2019, but I tried it on a fireplace job last month and the mortar slid off the trowel so smooth I almost felt silly for all the years of dry scraping. Only thing is, you have to shake it off or the mix gets soupy. Does anybody else do the wet trowel thing, or is this just a Midwest habit?

Wet trowel trick is just like wetting your knife before cutting cake.
