PSA: I watered my fiddle leaf fig with ice cubes for 3 weeks and half the leaves went yellow
Saw some lady on YouTube say ice cubes are a slow release water hack so I tried it on my fiddle leaf fig in my sunny Denver apartment. After about 3 weeks I noticed 5 lower leaves turning yellow and mushy at the base, and when I poked the soil it was soaking wet an inch down. Turns out the cubes melt in one spot and drown the roots instead of spreading out like a normal watering. Now I just stick my finger in the pot and water until it drips out the bottom. Has anyone else had a plant hack backfire like that?
Yikes! The real problem here is that ice cubes are way colder than the soil your roots are used to. I read once that tropical plants like fiddle leaf figs can go into shock when their roots hit freezing temps, even just for a few minutes. So it might not have been the drowning alone that did it, the cold could have damaged those little root hairs too. Plus in a dry Denver apartment the top of the soil dries out fast but the bottom stays wet, so checking with your finger deeper down is the way to go. Took me killing two pothos before I learned that trick.
