Hit 47 species in my little 10x12 Kansas City backyard and I don't know whether to brag or be worried
I started keeping a list of every plant species I could find in my yard last spring just to see how bad the lawn really was, and I crossed number 47 off the list this morning when I found a tiny patch of woodsorrel hiding under the downspout. The scary part is that 31 of them are things I never planted, which means either my yard is secretly a prairie or I have been accidentally farming weeds for 3 years. Do you count the volunteers on your species list or is that cheating?
Whoa, 47 is a lot for a yard that size! My buddy did the same thing a couple years back, started a list just to prove his lawn was mostly crabgrass and ended up at like 60 something. He counts everything, planted or not, because his whole point was to see what actually grows there on its own. The volunteers were the best part to him, he got like three kinds of native violets and a wild strawberry he never put in. Woodsorrel under a downspout makes total sense too, that stuff loves shade and wet spots. I say brag, you basically got a free prairie starter kit going.
