Growing basil from seed indoors beat buying starts from the nursery, and I'm not going back
I started 12 basil seeds in a $3 tray on my kitchen windowsill back in March and they outgrew the $6 nursery starts I bought the same week. The starts were already root bound and bolted in like 3 weeks, but my little seedlings kept bushing out every time I pinched the tops. My window only gets about 5 hours of light so I put a cheap clip lamp with a 5000K bulb over them and that made the real difference. Has anyone else noticed nursery starts are just too far along by the time they hit the shelf, or is that just my local place?

Did you ever think the nursery starts might be fine and your setup was just better than you expected? Starts sit on the shelf for a while and yes they can get root bound, but that's a timing thing at the store, not proof that seeds win every time. Plenty of people have the opposite luck where their seedlings stall out and the $6 start saves the season, so it mostly comes down to your light and how quick you pot them up.
