A botany professor's note about my sunflower spacing fixed my whole garden routine

Back in 2018 I was planting sunflowers about 6 inches apart because I wanted a thick wall of them. A professor from the state extension office stopped by my plot at the community garden and said “you're crowding them, they'll fight each other for water and fall over." He told me to use 18 inches minimum and actually thin to 24 inches for the big varieties. I changed the spacing that season and the stalks got noticeably thicker, plus the blooms lasted about 2 weeks longer. Since then I apply that same thinking to my tomatoes and peppers, giving them way more room than the seed packet suggests. Has anyone else gotten a correction from a pro that made you rethink a habit you'd kept for years?
