Am I the only one who prefers those hideous 1998 Geocities pages over modern minimalism?
Everyone raves about clean layouts, but I found a fan site from 1998 with blinking text, a tiled checkerboard background, and a midi file that still loads in 2 seconds, and honestly it tells you more about the creator than any slick Squarespace page ever could, so why are we all pretending ugly sites are useless when they're the only ones with actual personality left, has anyone else found a page that's so bad it's genuinely good?

What got me was the guestbook pages, where people would leave their ICQ numbers and little ASCII art signatures. You can't fake that kind of time investment, someone sat there typing spaces and slashes for twenty minutes just to make a tiny cat. Modern sites strip all that out and replace it with a hero image and three words. So when you stumbled on that fan site, did it have a webring link at the bottom? Those little circles of random sites are the closest thing the old web had to a rabbit hole, and I need to know if they still work.
