Warning: That $15 bookbinding glue from Michaels almost wrecked my entire project

After spending 8 hours last Tuesday on a leather-bound journal for my dad's retirement, the spine started peeling apart because I used cheap PVA instead of proper archival glue, so has anyone else had a budget adhesive fail on them at the worst possible moment?

Yeah, that's a tough lesson. I had a similar thing happen with a $9 bottle of Tacky Glue from Hobby Lobby on a photo album. It looked fine for a week, then the spine just gave out in the humidity. Switched to Lineco PVA and never looked back. For leather, you really need something with a pH neutral rating or you get that weak bond. Also, make sure you're roughing up the leather a bit where the glue goes, that helps more than people think.
