My awl broke mid-saddle stitch on a commission yesterday

The handle just snapped off while I was 3/4 through stitching a leather journal cover. I had to switch to my backup awl and the spacing doesn't match, so now I'm figuring out how to salvage the project without starting over. Any tips for matching stitch holes after a tool fails?

Hold your awl at the same angle and use a ruler to line up the new holes by eye, then re-punch just those few bad ones before you stitch them. I've fixed worse by carefully waxing the thread and pulling the old holes closed a little as I go.
