Finally got my French groove right after 3 months of trying

I've been struggling with sewing French grooves on my handmade books for ages. Last week I finally got one where the thread actually laid flat and didn't bunch up at the ends. What changed was I started using a curved needle and slowing way down on the second pass. Anyone else have a specific tool that just clicked for them one day?

Man, I had a buddy who was fighting with the same thing for like six months. He finally just grabbed a random upholstery needle from his grandma's sewing box and that did the trick. Funny how sometimes you just need the right tool and it all falls into place.
