Rant: My local library's book club only picks boring old books
I joined our community book club to talk about fresh stories, but every month it's another classic like Moby Dick. Who wants to debate symbolism in a book from 1851? Last time, I suggested a new novel about family drama, and the leader said it was too modern. Now they're voting to skip all books with cell phones in them. What kind of rule is that? It's like they're scared of anything written after TV was invented. How can we get new people to join if we don't read what's out now?

Consider skipping the classics vote if it bugs you that much. Maybe they're just picking stuff that actually lasts.

Seriously, I heard on a podcast how these lists get made and it really changed how I see them.

Exactly, once you know the process it makes you question every list you see. I can't just mindlessly scroll through them anymore without wondering who pushed what and why.
