Our club picked a 700 page doorstop for March and half of us quit before chapter 5, was it the book or us?
So our tiny book club, six people meeting at a diner in Akron on Tuesdays, voted in the book for March and it was this 700 page thing that weighed about as much as a brick. I made it to page 240 by day four and honestly I was liking it, the slow burn stuff, the long descriptions of a house. My friend Dana tapped out on chapter 5, said she read the same paragraph three times and still had no idea who was talking. Two more people stopped showing up by week two, so we went from six to three, and now we just sit there and argue about whether the book is actually bad or whether we are. I think the problem is we never set a pace rule, so the fast readers finish in a week and sit around waiting while the slow ones feel like they are drowning. We tried splitting it into chunks with a check in every Sunday and that helped a little, but by then the mood was already dead. Here is my real question for you all, when a pick kills half your group, do you finish it out of stubbornness or do you switch books mid month? And if you switch, how do you stop the next vote from going the same way?
