Welded a cracked firebox door uphill for 2 years before a guy from Gary showed me to walk the puddle downhill
I was welding a cracked firebox door on a little 15 horse boiler at the shop and kept burning through the top edge, so I'd grind it out and go again, same thing every single time. A old boilermaker named Ray from Gary, Indiana was dropping off a tube sheet and watched me for maybe five minutes, then told me to flip the rod angle and let gravity pull the puddle downhill on the vertical seam instead of pushing up. Tried it on the same door that afternoon and laid a bead so smooth I actually ran my glove over it twice to make sure I wasn't seeing things. Turns out I'd been fighting the metal for two years just because nobody ever showed me that one change. Any of you run into a uphill vs downhill thing on verticals that flipped your whole approach?
