Spent 6 hours chasing a leak on a boiler feed line that turned out to be a hairline crack under a hanger
Last Tuesday I got called to a plant in Hammond because they kept losing pressure overnight on a feed water line, and I figured it would be a quick gasket swap. I pressure tested the section twice, checked every flange by hand, and even pulled the insulation off 40 feet of pipe before I found it, a tiny crack hidden right where the line sat on a hanger saddle. The dye pen finally showed it after I'd already been on it about 6 hours and was ready to blame the pump. In the old days I would have found that in 20 minutes with a mirror and a flashlight, but I got lazy and leaned on the gauge too much. Any of you got a go to trick for finding cracks under hangers before you tear half the insulation off?
